Portach Promenade
Borrisokane, September 2024: Living in memory of who we’ve lost, where we come from and where we’re going- renowned local performance artist, video maker and climate activist, Deej Fabyc of Live Art Ireland, leads this project in memory of her late partner in love and art, Mark Newell, who passed away from a car crash in May 2023. The project involves a 5km walk through the Portach that begins at 11am from the Redwood Castle, as a community gathering transcending and working through grief. The walk will be accompanied by performances from performance artists and guest speakers, concluding with a grieving ritual. Topics discussed will include local history, biodiversity, soil science, and myths and legends of the bog. Film artists Jouana Roubles, Michael Higgins and sound artist Oli Ryan will document the walk. “We all may have lost someone important to us,” writes Deej. “And this walk through a landscape imbued with past ghosts and future memories for many local people will allow space for contemplation away from the distractions of our normal digitised present.” An integral part of our lives down through the decades, the Redwood Bog is remembered & cherished by many as a place of quiet repose, peace and beauty and for some hardship as we battled to save turf and bring it home. It is in this place, Mark and Deej wished to develop the concept they originally conceived last year, not receiving funding until three days after his sudden death. The collaboration was then unable to move forward until Deej received three different grants from Creative Ireland, Tipperary County Council and Arts Council of Ireland. Join us on Saturday October the 5th at 11am, meeting at Redwood Castle. Registration is online using Eventbrite and can be found under Portach Promenade – Live Art Ireland. Donations will go to the Irish Road Victims Association. photo Deej Fabyc; performers, Mariya Hoyin, Deej Fabyc, Volodymyr Topiy, Philemon Mukarno, Steef Kersbergen & Caro Ruoff location the Redwood bog North Tipperary
