Event Description

Overview Step inside Killoskehane Castle for a free Heritage Week Open Day. Explore the gardens, history and hidden stories of this 1580 castle. Step beyond the gates and discover one of Ireland's hidden historic treasures. As part of National Heritage Week 2026, Killoskehane Castle is delighted to open its doors to the local community for a relaxed and informal Open Day celebrating this year's theme, "Heritage at Risk." We are now more than halfway through the renovation and rejuvenation of Killoskehane and are excited to share our progress with you. For over four centuries, Killoskehane Castle has watched history unfold. Standing on this site since 1580, the castle has been home to remarkable characters, witnessed fascinating events, and remains an important part of the local landscape today. As a proud member of Historic Houses of Ireland, we are passionate about preserving this heritage for future generations and sharing its stories with visitors. What to expect Spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the grounds and discovering the castle at your own pace. During your visit you will be able to: Wander through the formal gardens and surrounding grounds. Enjoy a rare opportunity to step inside the principal rooms of the castle. Learn about the history of Killoskehane and some of the remarkable people who have called it home. Hear about the ongoing restoration and conservation of this historic property. Relax on the lawns with a picnic (weather permitting). Take photographs and enjoy the beautiful Tipperary countryside. Whether you have lived nearby for years or are visiting for the first time, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience a privately owned historic house that has been part of the local community for generations. Heritage at Risk Historic buildings require constant care and stewardship to survive. This year's National Heritage Week theme reminds us that our shared heritage is never guaranteed—it must be protected, maintained and appreciated. During the Open Day, we'll share some of the challenges and rewards of preserving a castle that has stood for more than 440 years, and why places like Killoskehane remain such an important part of Ireland's cultural landscape. Before you visit Entry is free, but registration is appreciated. Suitable for families and visitors of all ages. Comfortable footwear is recommended, as paths include gravel and grass. Please note that, as this is a historic building, some areas have uneven floors, steps and limited accessibility. We look forward to welcoming you for an enjoyable afternoon of history, gardens, architecture and community.
