Thurles Drama Group presents Dancing At Lughnasa
Brian Friel's deeply moving memory play is set in rural Donegal during the summer of 1936. Told through the eyes of Michael, now an adult recalling his childhood, it captures the lives of the five Mundy sisters—Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose, and Christina—as they navigate hardship, love, and fleeting joy in their small, impoverished household. Their fragile stability is disrupted by the return of their brother, Father Jack, home from years as a missionary in Africa, and by the occasional visits of Michael’s charming but unreliable father, Gerry. As the sisters listen to music from their crackling Marconi radio, they are overtaken by an irresistible impulse to dance, momentarily escaping the confines of duty and repression. Directed by Margaret McCormack, Thurles Drama Group's production of 'Dancing at Lughnasa' blends memory, myth, and music to create a hauntingly beautiful evocation of Ireland’s past.
