Tipperary People and Places Lecture series eighteen. William Rochfort, FSI, 1849-1940. From his land agency office in Cahir, County Tipperary, Rochfort managed many estates as geographically diverse as the Howth estate in North County Dublin and the Lansdowne estate in South County Kerry including may throughout County Tipperary in a career which spanned seven decades. Was he as it has been claimed, ‘the greatest enemy of the tenants’ who ruthlessly imposed the will of the landlord or was he a skilled professional ‘who served both landlord and tenant faithfully and honestly’. Margaret O’Sullivan, PhD researcher at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, and chair of Tipperary Historical Society will examine the career of Rochfort, through the extensive use of estate records including those of Shanbally (Clogheen), Watson (Ballingarrane, Clonmel) and Hankey (Knockgraffon)
